About the project

We need your help to understand the best child toilet training methods.  Get involved with the Big Toilet Project to be part of the world’s biggest toilet training study, the results of which will be shared with you and will help future children. Your participation will also help us advise governments about how they reduce the amount of plastic pollution caused by baby diapers.

Taking part

Taking part in the Big Toilet Project will help us enhance our understanding, support, and resources for parents and responsible adults navigating this developmental stage. Importantly, participants can contribute valuable insights, helping to develop better strategies, raise awareness, and promote toilet training practices for all.

You can take part by completing a short survey about your situation and your opinions about toilet training a child. There is also the optional Toilet Training Diary, where you can create an account to record monthly updates on your child’s toilet training progress and share more insights. By taking part in the project, you will help us gather real life information about what impacts toilet training. Participant responses will be shared anonymously via our webinars and open access reports so everyone can benefit from the collective learning.

The team

The Big Toilet Project was created by the UCL Plastic Waste Innovation Hub which is a research project run by the Institute of Making.  The website was developed by Ten4. This citizen science initiative is one of many research initiatives part of the UKRI funded project ‘Comfort Loop: A systems approach for sustainable hygiene products’ which is a three-year research project about reducing absorbent hygiene products (AHP) plastic waste.
